Well, I guess all the cool kids are doing it, so here goes...if you're reading this, consider yourself tagged. =)
Rules: Once you've been tagged, you are supposed to write a note with 25 random things, facts, habits, or goals about you. At the end, choose 25 people to be tagged. You have to tag the person who tagged you.
1. Sweetie's and my first date was on Valentine's Day. By accident. All I knew when I asked her out was that it was a Friday and I wasn't doing anything.
2. Moxie is by far my favorite soft drink. Unfortunately, it's also only available in New England.
3. I think bacon can make pretty much anything taste better.
4. In the 17 years between 1990 and 2007, I gained 10 pounds. During Sweetie's last pregnancy in 2007-08, I gained 15. I'm still working to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight. Item #3 in this list isn't helping with that goal, however. =)
5. Game 6 of the 1986 World Series was the first time a sporting event made me cry. I still carry the scars today.
6. I'm still waiting to get the memo that there was some horrible mistake and the Red Sox didn't actually win the 2004 World Series.
7. I was named "Most Improved Runner" on my 9th grade track team. Which meant that I sucked, but worked really hard during the track season.
8. I tried out for the Jeopardy Teen Tournament twice. Both times I passed the initial test and got to meet Alex Trebek for the second round of tryouts. Never made it on the show, though.
9. All Christians should be required to work at least one summer at a church camp. The eleventh commandment, perhaps?
10. When I was in elementary school, I was secretly disappointed in my pastor because he needed the book in order to lead the liturgy, and I had the whole thing memorized.
11. Also in elementary school, I used to lead entire worship services in my room for an imaginary congregation. I used checkers for communion wafers.
12. I used to drive a van to pick up kids and drop them off at daycare. 5-9 AM every day. My last day at that job was the Friday before the great October snowfall of 1997.
13. I also used to work at the Cliffs Notes headquarters. My former supervisor is now a member of the congregation where I serve.
14. I think I've learned more from the teenagers I work with than they'll ever learn from me.
15. The story of the Prodigal Son is my favorite parable, I think. Mostly because I've lived it, and have experienced the forgiving love of a father when I came home.
16. I was once engaged to someone before Sweetie. I think my former fiancee and I are much happier now than we would have been if things had worked out.
17. I've played on Vladimir Horowitz's piano.
18. Some of the best advice ever given me was this: "If you turn 30 and you still don't know what you want to be when you grow up, chances are you belong in ministry."
19. I always knew my parents loved me unconditionally and would do anything for me, but I never truly understood the depth of that love until I became a parent myself.
20. "Jesus Christ Is Risen Today" on a big ol' pipe organ with brass accompaniment never fails to bring me to tears.
21. In the last couple of years, I've discovered that I have three goals in life: to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with God. Everything else is basically an extension of those three things.
22. In May, I'll be seeing Billy Joel in concert for the 6th time. He is SO much better in concert than his recordings.
23. I've come to the conclusion that it's impossible for me to show or tell Sweetie exactly how much I love her, but that's not going to stop me from trying.
24. The youth I work with at church are pretty much some of the coolest people (in the best sense of the word) that I've run across. I mean that sincerely. And some of them (you know who you are) REALLY need to be thinking about ministry. =)
25. While I don't really believe that God has a specific plan for our lives, I DO think God creates us with specific gifts and abilities and says, "I can't WAIT to see what you do with this!"

"The Year In Review" Meme

If it's been going around my friends, is it a viral meme? I dunno. Anyway, the idea is this: go back and find the first sentence of the first blog post of each month for the past year. Consider yourself tagged if you've stayed with me this far.
January:
Okay, so this isn't technically one of the patented "Dr. Cox rants," but it's funny and involves Dr. Cox and makes a point, so I wanted to post it.
February:
Last night while lying in bed, waiting to fall asleep, I had one of those nighttime revelations: a year ago today was the first day that I was no longer officially employed by the Lutheran Student Center.
March:
Paul Simon (the musician, not the politician) was at my church Wednesday during our Lenten worship service.
April:
You know Palm Sunday has made an impression on your three year-old when after church, he hears the 80's pop hit Rosanna by Toto and starts singing along with the stereo: "Hosanna, hosanna..."

It's been a busy couple of weeks, hence my absence from the blogosphere as of late.

Once again, an unintended long absence.
July:
Saturday night, Sweetie and I took Kiddo and his best friend Peanut (like "Kiddo", not his real name) to a baseball game in Omaha.

Well, we went in to see Sweetie's OB doc today so she could get an exam and have an ultrasound done.

I'm still around, and I'm still planning on blogging...this pregnancy has just been kicking Sweetie's and my collective butts (whatever a "collective butt" is) the past month.

My aim yesterday was to celebrate the coming of the major league baseball playoffs (and the Red Sox's win in game one) by taking a video of Kiddo singing Take Me Out to the Ballgame.

Well, Sweetie had her 2nd trimester ultrasound on Wednesday afternoon (yep, that's right, Halloween).

Five Things I Dig About Jesus
1. Jesus had a sense of humor. And a good one at that. I'd be willing to bet that he loved a good laugh. My favorite part of this famous artist's rendering of a laughing Jesus isn't the perfect teeth or the groomed hair. It's the prominent laugh lines around his eyes:

Five Things I Dig About Jesus
1. Jesus had a sense of humor. And a good one at that. I'd be willing to bet that he loved a good laugh. My favorite part of this famous artist's rendering of a laughing Jesus isn't the perfect teeth or the groomed hair. It's the prominent laugh lines around his eyes:
I bet, even at age 33, that Jesus had laugh lines.
2. Jesus met people where they were, and transformed them. You name it...a bunch of fishermen who became disciples and apostles...a tax collector who paid back all he had stolen...a prostitute saved from a stoning who was challenged to go and sin no more...lepers healed...the list goes on and on. And he continues to do the same today.
3. Jesus was about wholeness, community, restoration. When there was a line drawn between us vs. them, righteous vs. unrighteous, any kind of division that served to separate, Jesus was always found on the other side of the line. He broke down human-made walls, allowing the Kingdom of Heaven to break through into everyday lives.
4. Jesus was God, yet still one of us. He became human, yet remained God. He was all-powerful, yet powerless. He was mighty, yet emptied himself. He was king of the universe, yet died a criminal's death on a piece of wood. He got hungry, thirsty, tired...he probably got cranky...he laughed, experienced joy...the whole human experience. Yet he was the same being who was there at the creation of the universe at the beginning of time.
5. Jesus had no patience for human-made rules that got in the way of God's work. He healed on the Sabbath. He touched unclean lepers. He ate and drank with tax collectors and prostitutes. He was about doing God's work, and anything that got in the way of that was useless to him, no matter how well-intentioned the rule may have originally been. Imagine the kind of work the church could do today if we followed Jesus' example instead of getting hung up on extraneous details that just get in the way of what we're called to do: love God and love our neighbor.

Eight Random Facts Meme

Well, since I was tagged by RevScott and then again indirectly by RuthRE, here goes:
1) Two of my favorite breakfast cereals are Corn Bran and Grape Nuts Flakes.
2) I can play the first 8 bars or so of a Mozart sonatina on a piano with my hands crossed over my head, behind my back (a nifty lil' parlor trick I learned after watching Amadeus).
3) I once worked at the English major's Seventh Heaven (or Seventh Level of Hell, depending on your viewpoint): Cliffs Notes World Headquarters.
4) I once played a Billy Joel song on Vladimir Horowitz's personal piano (New York State of Mind, if you're interested). Vladimir, I sincerely apologize.
5) Due to growing up with my dad's unique pancake recipe, I steadfastly refuse to eat any other type of pancake. French toast, on the other hand, is universally a good food.
6) My friends often refer to cotton, button-down collared shirts with plaid or checkered patterns as "a LutheranHusker shirt." Only they use my real name. Apparently those, and sweaters, are pretty much all I wear.
7) Two of my big and achievable dreams in life are to go to a Red Sox-Yankees game at Fenway Park and to go to a live taping of A Prairie Home Companion at the Fitzgerald Theater.
8) I worked at Camp Carol Joy Holling near Ashland NE for five summers. My first summer, I made a grand total of $600.00. Before taxes. But I wouldn't have traded the experience for the world.

6 Weird Things
I've been tagged by RevScott, so here goes:
Rules: 1) Post six weird things about yourself; 2) Tag six weird people to do the same.
1) I think raw oatmeal mixed with Hershey's chocolate syrup in a little cup makes a pretty darn good snack.
2) I prefer to keep the closet door closed when I go to bed...not so much to help airflow or anything practical like that, but mostly to keep the monsters out. Seriously.
3) Most of the time, when I'm awake, I have a song running through my head. Somewhere around 90% of my waking hours are spent listening to my internal radio. Except it's usually the same song over and over for hours at a time. And there aren't any commercials. Or DJ's. And just because it's there doesn't mean I like the song. Last Sunday, getting ready for worship, it was Shania Twain's Man, I Feel Like a Woman, which aside from being a song I can't stand, was wrong on just so many levels. I had to practice Now the Feast and Celebration three extra times very loudly on the organ to manually try to switch "head" songs...and because of that, I didn't have time for my morning cup of coffee before worship started. I was not too pleased with myself Sunday morning. Damned internal radio...
4) I really get freaked out when I allow myself to think about what's really happening during a long-distance phone call. Voices traveling thousands of miles with practically no delay whatsoever, after one person at one point has dialed a series of numbers that EVERY SINGLE TIME makes a connection to some specific other point. And don't even get me started on the internet...
5) Most nights at about 9 PM I have a craving for a bowl of cereal. Usually Grape Nuts Flakes, Corn Bran, or Shredded Wheat.
6) When I set my alarm, it has to be set for an even-numbered time that doesn't end with zero, and preferably ends with a 2. 6:28--good. 6:30--bad. 6:32--perfect. 6:35--bad.

High School Meme
1. Who was your best friend? Had a group of best friends. Folks from choir, mostly. Jodi, Sarah, Jason, Brian, another Brian, Brianna, and Angie, among others.
2. What sports did you play? 9th grade track
3. What kind of car did you drive? 1985 Chevy Nova
4. It's Friday night, where were you? Taco Bell, Village Inn, the Old Market, or at a friend’s house watching Clue (one of the funniest movies ever!)
5. Were you a party animal? Nope - didn't even know where the parties were!
6. Were you considered a flirt? Not that I know of.
7. Ever skip school? Once that I can remember—junior year, I had a big American History test I hadn’t studied for, so I faked illness for a day and crammed.
9. Were you in any clubs? Junior ROTC for a year (to get out of P.E.), Future Teachers of America, Debate, Literary Magazine, choir, show choir, National Honor Society, Mock Trial, Quiz Bowl, Drama. (Good Lord, when did I have time to actually learn something?!?!?!?!)
10. Suspended? Nope.
11. Can you sing the fight song? (To the tune of the University of Oregon’s fight song) We’re the Thunderbirds of West High, we’re the purple gold and white, we will cheer our team to victory, we will always prove our might. Thunderbirds are proud and loyal, and we’ll always do our best, we will fight to win our battles, Thunderbirds of Bellevue West! (yelling) CHEER! CHEER! FOR BELLEVUE WEST CAUSE WE! ARE! NEBRASKA’S BEST! FIGHT! FIGHT! WITH ALL YOUR MIGHT! THUNDERBIRDS KICK SOME @$&^@$ TONIGHT! (okay, that last line’s supposed to be “Thunderbirds win this game tonight” but nobody actually said that except the cheerleaders…)
12. Who was your favorite teacher? Wow…I had some great ones. Some standouts: Mr. Reimer for choir and music theory/history. Mrs. Wolford for English. Mrs. Beckmann for English.
13. What was your favorite class? English, followed closely by show choir/choir/music theory and music history.
14. What was your school's full name? Bellevue West High School
15. School mascot? The Thunderbirds!
16. Did you go to dances? A few of ‘em.
17. If you could go back and do it over again, would you? I’d do senior year over, but that’s about it.
18. What do you remember most about graduation? Singing Irish Blessing Song with the choir.
19. Favorite memory of your Senior Year? Endlessly debating in English, working my butt off but loving every minute in music theory (and the food days), being a high tenor yet being named bass section leader in choir, singing the stupidest solo in the history of the Broadway musical as part of our production of Oklahoma: The Farmer and the Cowman Should Be Friends.
20. Were you ever posted up on the senior wall? Didn't have one.
22. Where did you go most often for lunch? Lunchroom.
23. Have you gained weight since high school? 8 whole pounds.
24. What did you do after graduation? Went to Northeast Missouri State (which has since changed its name to Truman State University) to get a B.A. in English (cue the ever-so-true Avenue Q song What Do You Do With A B.A. In English?)

26. Where are most of your classmates? Spread out all over the country. Most of us were military brats, and there was a major restructuring the summer after graduation. They’re all over the place!
27. Did you have a high school sweetheart? Crushes, yes…sweethearts, sadly no. Didn’t go on a single date all throughout high school.
28. Have you changed since? Well, at my 10 year reunion, I was voted “Best Preserved.” (Oh dear...)

Getting to Know You--Holiday Edition
1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate?
Egg Nog (rum optional!)
2. Does Santa wrap presents or just set them under the tree?
He just sets them under the tree. Busy guy, you know!
3. Colored lights on tree/house or white?
Depends on the look you're going for. White for the classy, "adult" look, colored lights if you wanna look kid-friendly. Our tree this year has all-white lights.
4. Do you hang mistletoe?
Nope--I don't need an excuse to kiss my sweetie!
5. When do you put your decorations up?
Depends mostly on when we have the time. Ideally for me is the afternoon of the first Sunday of Advent.
6. What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)?
It's a tie between my mom's meat stuffing and a new favorite, Sweetie's green bean casserole!
7. Favorite Holiday memory as a child:
I think just the whole Christmas Eve/morning routine. With relatives scattered to the four winds, we usually didn't have anyone to visit, so we'd open gifts from aunts/uncles, grandparents, and each other on Christmas Eve after supper, then go to church, then go to bed and try to get an hour or two of sleep before waking up EARLY to see what Santa had brought under the tree and in our stockings. I was always the first one awake, and the rule was we couldn't go downstairs until everyone was awake...I wasn't allowed to do anything to wake up my sister, so I'd just go into her room and look at her until she woke up. Ever get the feeling someone's watching you? Well, it also can happen when you're asleep...usually it would only take 5 minutes or so and she'd be awake.
8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa?
Not sure--I think I was pretty young, but I don't remember when I found out.
9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve?
See #7 for the routine when I was growing up. Now, it just kind of depends on who we're visiting or what we're doing.
10. How do you decorate your Christmas Tree?
It's been different each year, but this year we have white lights, dark red beads, all of The Kiddo's ornaments, and a few of Sweetie's and mine from when we were growing up. We've had to cut back on our ornaments because between the 3 of us, we had so many that if we were to hang them all up you wouldn't be able to see the tree!
11. Snow! Love it or Dread it?
Snow is evil and must be stopped at all costs. The only time it's acceptable for it to snow is on Christmas Eve. Give me half an inch with nice big flakes, let it stay on the ground until January 2nd, then give me a nice couple of days of 60 degree weather to get rid of it.
12. Can you ice skate?
Much in the same way that a toddler can run. Yes, you can call it skating, but potential disaster lurks every time I move my feet.
13. Do you remember your favorite Christmas gift ?
My favorite Christmas gift actually came on December 11, 2003, when The Kiddo was born.
14. What's the most important thing about the Holidays for you?
Reading Luke 1-2, going to church, and singing those wonderful Christmas hymns.
15. What is your favorite Holiday Dessert?
Cranberry mince pie!!!!!!!!!
16. What is your favorite holiday tradition?
Listening to Handel's Messiah during supper each Sunday in Advent, with the advent wreath lit. If you usually take about a half hour for supper, you can get through the whole Messiah in four weeks.
17. What tops your tree?
We have a beautiful gold and silver colored star.
18. Which do you prefer, giving or receiving?
I LOVE to give gifts!
19. What is your favorite Christmas Song?
O Holy Night.
20. Candy Canes! Love them or hate them?
Mmmmmmm....candy canes....especially in hot chocolate...
